SCRR Memorial Award

In 1995 the SCRR created the Carey Burke Award which was given to a club member who
represented Carey’s enthusiasm for running and our club. Carey’s positive attitude lasted long
after leukemia took him away in 1993. This award has been given to club members who have
shared in this same spirit and enjoyment of distance running for 24 years.

In 2019 the name has been changed to the SCRR Memorial Award to continue to honor Carey as
well as other past club members who shared in his spirit and love for the club. These past
members include: Hank Coppock, Thorpe Running, Dale Carlson, Leon Meyer, Steve and
Cheryl Tenvoorde, Keith Nelson, Gerry Stock, Carol Wintheiser, Jeannine Sjogren, Dave
Carlson, and John Seiler.

Roxann Schmitz, 2025 SCRR Memorial Award Recipient

The 2025 Memorial Award was presented to Roxann Schmitz. Roxann was an active member of the River Runners in the past, but took a hiatus due to health issues. When a “no drop” run option presented itself, Roxanne took the opportunity and “ran with it.” She built up her mileage and encouraged other slower runners and walkers to join the group. She persevered through additional health issues while keeping a very positive attitude. She accepted the two-year term as co president and will serve from 2025-2027. We all appreciate what Roxann has brought to the club, and we are very lucky that she has come back to us. Congratulations Roxann!
